02. Laid Off During OPT Period
While job hunting, you can apply to a new school offering a CPT program to maintain legal status. Transferring your SEVIS record to the new school within the Grace Period allows you to legally remain in the U.S. You must start your program within five months or by the next available start date, whichever comes first.
03. Laid Off During H-1B Period
You can remain in the U.S. by applying for a Change of Status (COS) from H-1B to F1. After receiving the initial I-20 from the new school, the COS application can be submitted for USCIS approval. Processing times vary, so it's important to prepare as early as possible.
